Even though I’ve had no spiritual experiences, I recognize what it has done for others and feel that now is the time for me to give it serious thought. Booze remains culturally enmeshed and the individual possibility of becoming addicted is low, compared to substances like heroine, despite its potency.
What does it mean to be spiritually ill?
Illness attributed to supernatural forces may be due to soul loss, ancestral spirits, tame household spirits, wild forest spirits, malevolent spirits, or shaman spirits, but can also be attributed to magical interferences by humans in the form of curses.
I must not continue to suffer that shyness, aloneness, that overwhelming sense of separation in the different aspects of my life. I must get involved in a group of people to practice these principles in all my affairs. His rigidity, coldness, aloofness, isolation and difficulty with other people were a reflection of the pain in his heart…of the disease of alcoholism gone deep inside, still active even though he hadn’t had a drink in many years. We don’t have to drink to die of alcoholism. The County Coroner had published the required notices for next of kin and nobody had claimed the body.

In my dismay, it was suggested to me later that folks who were satisfied with sitting in discussion meetings and acting out intermittently, were perhaps not the “desperate drowning man” the Twelfth Step instructed me to seek.

It sure didn’t feel like the holidays without the freezing temperatures as the weather was really warm. This year I spent all the holidays away from my family, but I was very grateful to be at sober living instead of long term treatment. And obviously the biggest change was being clean and sober. No brown liquor or powder this year… I really did not know what to expect given all of the above. I try to front-load them with information because information can be key to understanding how to take back their own power in the family structure after oftentimes feeling powerless for so long. They ask questions and sometimes take notes of their own.
It’s not that I don’t want to be HERE, it’s that I don’t want to be here – anywhere else either. So unless I can experience an entire psychic change, there is little hope that I am ever going to recover. The disease of alcohol and drug addiction spiritual malady is not just mental and physical but also spiritual. The spiritual malady, however, can be seen as an inward unmanageability. It affects every aspect of our lives and must be overcome if we wish to fix ourselves mentally and physically.
